When Does Fog Occur?
Cooling Fogs
Radiation Fog
Cooling from adjacent air & ground
Clear skies, light wind, high relative humidity
Thickest fog in valleys
Advection Fog
Occurs when warm air blows over a cold surface
Winds between 10-30km/hr are required
Warm air is cooled by cold water below
Lasts longer than radiation fog
1000-2000 feet above surface
Upslope Fog
Humid air moves up slope
Layer of fog forms when dew point is reached
Air expands and cools
Evaporation Fogs
Steam Fog
Saturated air rises
Moisture evaporates
Cool air blows over warm water
Common occurrence over bodies of water when air is cold
Heat and moisture from water transfer into the air
Frontal Fog
Cooler air becomes saturated
Thick fog
Warm & wet air rises over cold & dry air
Most common with light rain
