Early
Fur traders - went west in the winter to hunt for fur which they would then sell to Europe, when the trade died down they became guides for the later settlers
Gold miners - went west (particularly, California) after gold was discovered in 1849 - only problem was that the gold was basically all gone when most of them got there
Later settlers

former slaves - freed after the civil war, many went west to escape the racism.

Others - many went west due to "manifest destiny" (God given right to go west) or because land was cheaper in the west then in the east
