Public Health Emergency Preparedness
Multiple measures of emergency preparedness has been implemented by federal, state, and non-governmental organizations in the last few years.
but, this has not necessarily resulted in emergency preparedness.
We need a clear definition of public health emergency preparedness.
PHEP
PHEP suggested definition: to prevent, protect, respond quickly to, and recover during health emergencies in crisis for health care systems, communities, and individuals.
Improvement by testing action plans, health, and resiliency.
PHEP consists of prevention, mitigation, recovery, and operational capabilities (quick execution).
Responsibilities are on governmental agencies, community residents, businesses, and nongovernmental organizations through coordination efforts.
This is done by building upon existing systems and public health practices.
Action-oriented elements to achieve PHEP
Decisions moving forward are made depending on the greatest hazards and vulnerabilities to act upon the most affected populations.
Assessing barriers that hinder response.
Identifying responsible parties for rapid response in the most appropriate manner.
Rapidly implementing public health functions- detection, investigation, identifying hazards, and providing information to the public.
Maintenance of disaster.
Having workers and volunteers who can work in stressful situations.
Accountability and quality improvement through testing and practicing exercises and drills.
These elements provide shared terms for what is exactly involved in improving preparedness.
These are vital when accessing the best route to take to achieve the smoothest plan for emergencies.
With no definition for public health emergency preparedness, policymakers will continue to struggle when making decisions for attacks and outbreaks.
We need a definition to ease everyone's minds when needing to be prepared for and in the future.
I think this is crucial for everyone to work together during emergencies and be prepared for them in advance. Without having a set plan or definition, society will be chaos and will not be able to function or recover.
