William Howard Taft (1909 - 1912)
Foreign policy extended limited self-rule in the Philippines.
Jones Act
Congress passed the Jones Act in 1916, for the Philippines. This was done after Taft served as a governor of the Philippines.
Philippines would ultimately gain their independence
30 years after the act was passed, the Philippines would become an independent nation after US forces liberated the islands from Japanese occupation at the end of WW2.
Construction of roads, bridges, and schools.
Public Health System for Filipinos
Helped recover from rebellion
The Philippine Assembly was able to:
Many of Taft's ideas were similar to Roosevelts.
However, instead of "big stick," he relied on "dollar diplomacy." This was aimed to increase American business investments.
"Dollar diplomacy" wasn't always the best choice so at one time Taft dispatched troops into Nicaragua. Protecting the formation of a pro-American government.
Woodrow Wilson (1913 - 1920)
Foreign policy in Puerto Rico stated that under the Foraker Act, Puerto Rico would establish a civil government.
President Wilson in 1917 signed the Jones-Shafroth Act. This act allowed for more citizenship rights and more control over the legislature for Puerto Ricans.
Had intentions to take US foreign policy differently with his new "moral diplomacy."
This new diplomacy would allow the use of the military to guide Latin Americans in the way he thought was right.
The president helped Carranza attain power in Mexico during 1914. By sending marines to collapse the government of Huerta, Carranza continued to rule Mexico.
Carranza
William McKinley (1896 - 1901)
Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American War was ignited in the 1890s when Cuban citizens were wrongly treated by Spain. This angered Cubans which resulted in Americans wanted to join the fight and help Cuba. McKinley would be the president who allowed for American troops to fight alongside Cuba but not only Cuba, America fought Spain as a whole.
Victories
Commodore George Dewey launched an attack on Spanish military located in the Philippines. It was an easy battle as the Spaniards didn't expect to be attacked. None the less, nearly 400 Spanish sailors lost their lives from the American forces leading to an American victory in the Philippines.
It was June 1898 when US Marines captured Guantanamo Bay, and 17,000 soldiers of US Army General William Shafter took the shore of Santiago. This would be the end of Spanish rule in Cuba.
Guam was giving up by the Spaniards in the Treaty of Paris
When McKinley sent the USS Maine battleship to Cuba, an accident caused the ship to explode and sink. The Americans believed this was a mine planted by the Spaniards. This would be fuel needed to really ignite the war.
There were about 200,000 men enlisted in the army and about 25,000 enlisted in the beginning of 1898, when the ship exploded. With this many men fighting, America won against the Spaniards.
The Treaty of Paris was signed by Spain and the United States in December 1898. This Treaty required Spain to give up control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific Island of Guam. The US also bought the Philippines for $20 million. This officially ended the war, but it couldn't prevent guerrilla warfare in these countries.
His foreign policy was used in the war to his advantage to imperialize nations overseas which were in the hands of Spain.
Theodore Roosevelt (1901 - 1908)
The Open Door Policy
This argued for equal privileges while trading with China as so China doesn't favor one country over the other.
The goal for this policy was to bring American businesses into the foreign markets.
The further make this a reality, the US took indemnity money from China to fund scholarships for Chinese students looking to study in the US.
Russo-Japanese War
The fight occurred as both Japan and Russia wanted to have more influence in China.
Roosevelt entered the war to convince both Russia and Japan to sign a peace treaty.
However, this led to troubles with Japan as they were not pleased with American anti-Asian sentiment on the west coast of the US.
This was negotiated with the "Gentleman's Agreement."
"Big Stick" Diplomacy
This meant that America needed to be more assertive with their military during the Age of Imperialism.
