complex systems- include: heterogenous agents, contact structures, adaptation, nonlinear dynamics, stochasticity
-
feedback between could be between behavioral and environmental features, health and social circumstances
-
dependincies between individuals: outcome for one individual is affected by others individual outcomes
presence of macro level patterns that come from interplay of factors at diff levels: end result of multiplicity of processes at different levels and scales
population health characteristics: feedback, dependencies, emergent patterns
coles theory of recursive development remodeling: environment affects gene expression, triggers neuroendocrine response, then affects biological structure and function

-
reductionist thinking: looks at one factor or variable at a time reducing the potential to one cause and one effect
"magic bullet" or "miracle cure": reductionist thinking used to search for only one answer to the why and what should be done to improve an outcome
systems thinking: goes beyond reductionist thinking by utilizing data from that to identify key factors
-
-
system can be used to describe a healthcare system, public health system or research system
system analysis: implementing systems thinking needs tools for analyzing pieces and understanding how they work together
using systems analysis is used by understanding a disease and its outcome, first looking at influences on the outcomes
feedback loops: changes in a factor or an influences can provide feedback into the process which can have a negative or positive impact on the outcome
6 steps of system analysis: identify influences, estimate relative strength of influences, examine interactions between factors, identify feedback loops, identify bottlenecks, identify leverage points
interactions between factors, influences or determinants is important to population health

One health is that human health is dependent on animal health and the ecosystem in the world we live in. The connection between human, animal, and ecosystem
community health assessment: goal is to develop strategies so that communities needs can issues can be addressed
