- - - - First anaesthetic used by Robert Liston in 1846. Highly effective in use during surgery however had non-permanent side affects that were considered terrible. It was also a flammable gas which wasn't good in a candle-lit room.
    - - Highly effective anaesthetic that was found in 1847 by James Simpson. It didn't have the same side affects as ether making it better in that regard.
