International Food for Students
Nutritional Values
Fats
Fats are a long-term energy source used in the body. In school students need energy to concentrate and focus, and thus we'd prefer more fats and carbohydrates. For fats, healthier alternatives such as avocado should be used to not hurt the human body.
Carbs
Carbohydrates are a form of short-term energy that is essential in the body, at any age group. As such I would want to incorporate much of that into my dishes. Foods such as pasta have a high carbohydrate count that students need in their lives daily.
Protein
Protein is essential for growth and repair in the body, and for children protein is even more essential compared to adults. Thus, we'd prefer extra protein sources such as beef, chicken and tofu.
Energy
Energy is important for children as they need energy throughout the day. Thus it is important that our dishes have high amounts of carbohydrates and healthy fats.
Sugars
Students need a certain amount of natural sugars. For a international menu for a school we'd prefer less sugars in foods.
Calcium
Calcium is needed to keep the bones healthy and strong. This is very useful for students and thus we'd want more calcium in the dishes we'd be making.
Cuisines
Chinese
Chinese food is a healthy cuisine that uses the steaming cooking method. However, Chinese food has a flaw in that it requires a lot of time to cook, and thus I won't consider it for my NEA2.
Italian
Italian foods can be unhealthy, such as foods like Tiramisu, but also has healthy options like pasta. For my NEA2 I will prepare a pasta dish as it has carbohydrates, tastes good, doesn't need much time and has other nutrients that I can add in the pasta sauce.
French
French foods are typically really rich and focus on sweet foods, such as croissants or macarons. Because these are unhealthy, take a long time to produce and are not suitable to school food I will not consider this for my NEA2.
Korean
Korean food is a underappreciated cuisine that incorporates balance into their dishes. Foods that I'd consider for NEA2 such as Gimbap are healthy and incorporate several nutrients in their ingredients.
Japanese
Japanese foods are rich in nutrients and are typically healthy. For example, Japanese sushi utilize fish which contain Omega-3 Fatty acids and a good amount of rice. Japanese food is healthy, but typically doesn't require much skills to make.
Thai
Thai foods are one of the most underappreciated cuisines in the world. Packed with flavor and taste they are a cuisine I'd like to incorporate into my NEA2 dishes.
Other Things to Remember
Budget
Avoid high budgets, cheaper food
Quality
High quality that is quick to be produced. If takes a lot of time then it isn't worth doing in a school perspective
Time
Time to produce needs to be decently quick. Foods like a pho, although involving a lot of skills and being high quality take several hours to bring out the flavor.
