Social change & Minority influence
defintion
when members of a majority group convert to the views if a minority. The effectiveness can be affected by consistency, commitment and flexibility
factors
Consistency
minority needs to repeat the same message over time (diachronic consistency) and give the same message (synchronic consistency)
Commitment
member is willing to suffer for their views but still hold them. eg. suffragettes ( emily pankhurst)
Attribution theory- processes people use to assign motives to behaviour. augmentation principle- suggests that if someone performs an action despite costs and risks, the underlying motive or attribute driving that action is considered strong
Flexibility
need to be able to consider valid counter arguments and show they are reasonable
The snowball effect
minorities changing majority opinions starts as a slow process as each person only converts a few members of the majority. However, this rate picks up speed as more of majority convert. increased social acceptability.
Evaluation for Minority influence
Moscovici's study- displayed 36 blue slides of different shades to groups of 4 pp and 2 confeds. If confed were consistent then 8% agreed. if inconsistent 1%.
+ve= flexibility= shown to help minorities influence members of majority. Nemeth- asked 3 real pp and one confed to act as mock jury- if inflexible = less likely to convince.
-ve= lab based studies affecting minority influence- highly artificial and may not be valid when generalised to real world minority influence.
definition
when a view is held by a minority group challenges the majority view and is eventually accepted by the majority
due to different factors - commitment, consistency and flexibility
obedience- members of gov are minority that enact dramatic social change by creating laws
conformity- normative social influence examples= recycling, vaping or fitness. Informational influence= effects of climate change
Social crypto-amnesia- how society adopts ideas from a minority group, once mainstream accepts these ideas and become the norm
