Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning(ML)
Privacy and Security Challenges
Concerns arise about consent and how personal data is handled, because AI/ML systems require substantial amounts of data.
Scenario 1: Should companies use personal data collected without consent to train AI models?
Unethical Option: Use the data, arguing that it is anonymous or that users agreed to terms and conditions.
My choice? The ethical option. I based my decision in deontological ethics, which is based on on respecting individual autonomy.
Ethical Option: Gather consent from users before using personal data
Scenario 2: Should AI be used for constant surveillance in public spaces?
Unethical Option: Use continual AI surveillance without notifying the public, which can potentially infringe on privacy.
My choice? The ethical option. There might be need for greater security, which can be supported by utilitarian ethics, but deontological ethics is based on individuals’ rights.
Ethical Option: Inform the public and establish regulations and parameters around the surveillance
AI being used for surveillance in public and private spaces raises question of potentially infringing on personal freedoms.
Cybersecurity Advantages
AI/ML help to detect and respond to cyber threats quickly and more efficiently.
AI can be used to create systems that can protect against attacks more efficiently than humans can.
Scenario 1:Should AI systems be making important security decisions without human intervention or oversight?
Unethical Option: Allow AI systems to make decisions unregulated.
My choice? The ethical option. Virtue ethics emphasizes doing the right thing and cautiously approaching risks
Ethical Option: Incorporate human oversight to ensure all decisions are ethical and right.
Scenario 2:Should companies share data from previous cyberattacks with other companies to improve overall security for everyone?
Unethical Option: Keep the data within the individual companies
My choice? The ethical option. This is an option that benefits society as a whole, as outlined with utilitarian ethics
Ethical Option: Share the information to enhance security for all.
Cybersecurity Risks
AI may cause disruptions in business processes if there were instances of it identifying non-threats as threats.
Scenario 1:Should AI be trusted with identifying potential threats even knowing there may be false threats ?
Unethical Option: Allow AI to monitor and flag potential threats with no adjustment or intervention
My choice? The ethical option. This protects users from harm and does what is right for everyone, which is a key factor of virtue ethics.
Ethical Option: Make adjustments that incorporate human review for minimal disruptions to the business
Scenario 2: Should companies reveal their vulnerable points when their AI is attacked to the general public?
Unethical Option: Hide breeches and attacks in attempt to protect the companies reputation.
My choice? The ethical option. This uses virtual ethics to support doing the right thing
Ethical Option: Be transparent about the attacks and work to continually improve on the vulnerabilities
AI systems can be manipulated, which causes cybersecurity risks.
Ethical Challenges
There can be bias in the data AI uses, which can cause discriminatory decisions and outcomes to be made.
Scenario 1:Should AI be used to make hiring decisions when they have been shown to use bias?
Unethical Option: Use AI to make hiring decisions for the company
My choice? The ethical option. Using programs free of bias and discriminatory practices is the right thing for society as a whole
Ethical Option: Do not use AI tools with known bias and work to remove biases
Scenario 2:Should AI be used to predict or prevent criminal behavior?
Unethical Option: Use predictive tools and measures, even if they target marginalized groups of society
My choice? The ethical option.
Ethical Option: Do not use these AI tools knowing they reinforce inequality.
Allowing AI to make decisions takes the power to make decisions away from humans and disrupts individual autonomy
