- - - - The use of violent imagery, i.e, fire, blood, anguish, creates a vivid and apocalyptic outlook on the future of society. This correlates directly with the First and Second World Wars, and is designed to trigger a post-war audience, who would know the impacts of war well, and invoke them to realise that the greedy and capitalist nature of society led to these wars
      - The dramatic irony of this quote also portrays the Inspector as wise and well-educated, which adds a sense of establishment and respect within the audience as they know his claims to be correct, especially in comparison to Mr Birling's outlook on the future as of 1912.
    - - This quote is taken directly from Genesis, and is used in Holy Communion. This links the socialist words of the Inspector to those of God Himself, further encouraging the audience to support socialism as Priestley makes a direct link between the ideology and Christianity.
- - - - Here, the Inspector refers to living as a working class woman as "that sort of existence", implying it is incredibly unpleasant and unappealing. by claiming "a lot" live that way and suffer, The inspector highlights their suffering to those responsible for it, which shows he is campaigning for them and attempting to build sympathy for them.
      - By linking the depressing and desperate lives of the working class to the functioning of the factories creates the idea that they are tied to each other, that capitalism depends on the suffering of the least fortunate to benefit the usually only the richest/the factory owners. This linking of the two by Goole advocates for the poor while criticising their current oppression
- - - - These quotes show the Inspector refuses to indulge in sinful or leisurely behaviour, even as minor as drinking on the job. This presents him effectively as incorruptible and determined, making him appealing and heroic to the audience, therefore, they will trust what he says more, especially after the views of Arthur, which were all completely wrong.
    - - This juxtaposition portrays Mr Birling as desperate to save himself, even to the point where he would break the law to maintain his wealth and reputation, while the inspector simply and respectfully refuses. This presents Birling (capitalism) as immoral and socialism (via the Inspector) as moral and the superior option to the audience
        
        This direct and constant comparison is another way The Inspector is used as Priesley's mouthpiece. By presenting him as distinguished and honourable socialism is also presented this way, far superior to selfish and heartless capitalism
