Recommendations made by Licensed Missouri cannabis dispensaries regarding cannabis use in pregnant patients.
Objective: To summarize recommendations provided by licensed cannabis dispensaries in Missouri regarding the use of cannabis products during pregnancy.
The Problem: With the legalization of cannabis in Missouri, there is a suspected increase in use, but no law in place to ensure dispensaries are recommending pregnant patients consulting with a provider prior to use. Due to fear of judgement or legal repercussions, pregnant patients may not feel comfortable discussing cannabis use with a healthcare provider and therefore rely on dispensaries for recommendations for use.
Nevada study: Law in place stating that pregnant women should consult a healthcare provider prior to use. Study showed that a majority of dispensaries were not recommending a cannabis product and the patient should consult a healthcare provider.

Colorado study: No law in place. Study found that a majority of dispensaries did not recommend consulting a provider and recommended a cannabis product.

Known: American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have guidelines highlighting the use of cannabis during pregnancy and the associated risk.
Cannabis is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and there are currently no recommendations regarding its use for pregnancy-related conditions. Additionally, there are safety precautions and ACOG currently discourages against the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes during pregnancy.
