Dissertation on AI usage in Cybersecurity
Possible Topics
Different Machine Learning algorithms: Explain different ML models; How can they be utilized effectively in cybersecurity
Generative AI: How does this new type of AI affect cybersecurity
Specific use cases: Eg Spam detection, intrusion detection and prevention systems, malware detection
Ethical concerns of AI: Data privacy concerns; How ethical is it for AI models (like ChatGPT) to train off other's data without their consent.
Why
I am focused on pursuing a computer science degree at university
Project allows me to demonstrate my strong passion in computer science; It wouldn't be 'boring' writing a dissertation
AI is only going to have a larger impact in the future; It's a very important tool to understand and learn
Process & Sources
Research using Sources
Secondary Sources: Academic journals, books, research papers, videos or podcasts online, etc...
I should make use of the University of Cambridge's Library and database to access academic papers and books.
Use reputable sources like Google Scholar and not Wikipedia
Primary Sources: Email correspondence or interview with professors or industry professionals on the topic after I conduct some research.
Later on in the project, I could interview the IT team at Hills to see how they manage cybersecurity.
I could maybe email industry professionals I met before at work experiences.
Product: I will need to write a 5000 word dissertation on my topic. It needs to contain information from my research as well as my own opinion and thoughts on the topic.
Planning: I need to conduct extensive research and stick to a deadline.
Skills
Research: I need to learn to make concise, detailed notes without directly copying a source. I also need to cite all my sources.
Academic writing: All my subjects are calculation and STEM based. Writing an academic essay is a skill I need to learn.
This research-based dissertation is very different from the interpretation-based essays in GCSE English literature.
Communication: I need to show, document and communicate all my work and thoughts behind my project.
Time management & Organization: It's very easy to fall behind if I don't set strict deadlines. I also need to figure out a good system and workflow to document my work.
