The Conservatives during the period have often been criticized for being essentially negative, reactionary, lacking in confidence., confrontational (General Stike,, 1926) unimaginative and veering to the right wing as time progressed. There is some truth in all of these criticisms, but a more balanced assessment of this period would praise the Conservatives for significant achievement, in foreign affairs, domestic reconstruction and welfare developments — especially those overseen by Neville Chamberlain as Minister for Health
