Russia was a low industrialized country
Governed by the Tsar Nicholas II, in an
autocratic
way (no elections, no protesters allowed...)
90% percent of poor peasants
In 1914, it enters the First Wolrd War against Germany
Heavy losses during First World War
Thousands of young russians died in the battlefields
Protests against the Tsar (
February Revolution 1917
)
The Tsar abdicates
New government led by Kerensky
He organizes elections (he was a democrat)
But he decided to continue the War
Lenin (Bolshevik Party) arrives to Saint Petersburg
He is promising 3 things: giving lands to the peasants, making peace with Germany and governing with the soviets (worker´s assemblies)
In the
October Revolution 1917
, he took power and became president
He was helped by the germans, that wanted to create problems in Russia
A Russian Civil War started (1918-1923)
Red Army, created by Trotsky (Bolsheviks) vs. White Army (anti-Bolsheviks)
Lenin wins, and implement the
Communism
in Russia
No private property. All companies belonged to the Government
Dictatorship: Only the Bolshevik Party is allowed
