LOADS AND STRESSES
LOAD
External force acting on a body
TENSION
with TENSION the two sections of material on either side of a plane are pulled apart or elongated
COMPRESSION
during COMPRESSION the component reduces its volume and increase its density
SHEAR
during SHEAR a load is applied parallel to a plane and the two planes of the same object try to slide on past one another
BENDING
with BENDING a material curves and is compressed on one side and stretched on the other
TORSION
with TORSION a material twist
STATIC LOADING
when a material is subjected to a constant force
DYNAMIC LOADING
also called CYCLIC loading - is when the load on the material is not constant but fluctuates
STRESS
applied force or system of forces that tends to deform a body
STRAIN
the ratio between the deformation and the original lenght or form
DEFORMATION
how much the object is stretched
