Roots
functions:
-absorption of water and nutrients
-anchorage of the plant in soil
-storage of nutrients
-transportation of water and nutrients to the rest of the plant
-
-
early root structures:
-rhizoids: present in non-vascular plants like mosses and liverworts
-vascular tissue: allowed development of true roots, stems, and leaves in vascular plants
external structures:
-root hairs: increase surface area for absorption
-root cortex: stores nutrients and transports water
-endodermis: acts as a selective barrier for water and nutrients entering the vascular system
internal structure:
-epidermis: outer layer providing protection
-cortex: bulk tissue storing carbohydrates and water
-pericycle: gives rise to lateral roots
-xylem and phloem: conduct water, nutrients, and food through the plant
