English Romanticism is a revolt of the imagination against Enlightenment reason, influenced by the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.

The Romantics express a negative attitude towards the existing social and political conditions, place the individual at the center of art, and argue that poetry should be free from rules.

• Fascination with the irrational, the past, the mysterious, and the exotic.
