Initial impressions
Initially in the play, Sheila seems to be materialistic, naive, childish and easily-pleased
Shown by her huge exictment for a ring, Gerald picked himself for her to wear

Priestley presents this engagement to Gerald as superficial and business orientated to allow Sheila to develop in maturity and ultimately return the ring to Gerald by the end of the play.

Final impressions
By the end of the play, Sheila is transformed, and has conformed fully to the socialist ideals put forward by the inspector. Sheila has become what Priestley wants the middle class to be, sympathetic for those around them and below them societally.
