Erving Goffman (SOC2)
Introduction
pioneer of micro-sociology, or the close examination of the social interactions that compose everyday life (vignettes of observation)
-
-
influenced by George Simmel, sociologist known for his work on social interactions and urban life
his studies are "comparative, qualitative sociology that is aimed to produce generalisations about human behaviour"
key texts: Asylum, Stigma, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life
-
Stigma
-
-
discredited traits are immediately obvious, discreditable traits aren't immediately visible - leads to strategies of concealment for self-betterment or survival
could explore this through the lens of sexuality (butch lesbians, camp gays), drag queens (i.e 'fish' queens), and trans people
could explore through lens of race (concept of 'white-passing') e.g. the TV series "Queen" (1993) starring Halle Berry, Queen passes as white to escape stigma and gain societal acceptance. This concealment reflects a form of coping with the intense prejudice and rejection she faces. However, this concealment also brings internal conflict and complicates her sense of self.
Asylums
studies a large hospital in Washington, DC revealing how total institutions control every aspect of life incl, sleep, work, and play
total institutions impose rigid schedules and eliminate personal routines - leads to significant psychological effects
Disculturation: the process of un-training individuals, making them incapable of functioning outside the institution
Role-Dispossession: the removal of personal identity and routines, leading to a loss of self
-
Symbolic interactionism - refers to the peculiar and distinctive character of interaction as it takes place between human beings
referring to social interactions as a cycle of events and every step corresponds to a certain stimulus/reaction
meanings assigned to a certain symbol and these symbols are used in a sense as for the other to understand their significance
these symbols need to be viewed by the other individual in the same light as the person they are talking to
e.g. gun symbol often associated w violence, but others may associate different feelings to it; for a terrorist, it is a means to spread terrorism, for a child its a toy
the interaction of humans is mediated by the use of symbols by either interpreting or ascertaining the other person's reaction
as people grow because of these interactions, they learn to interpret and analyse these symbols in a more informative way
life as a drama
Goffman saw the men and women of the world as part of a drama, playing specific roles
-
'roles' constructed with society in mind, so interactions are very 'unscripted' which leads to successful human interactions in society
the roles would enable a person to portray oneself in a light which was 'true' but 'developing' and at the end of the drama, one would present their true self
Other Key Concepts
Impression Management: process by which individuals attempt to control the perceptions others have of them, often by presenting a specific image/identity
Stigma: explores deviance and societal expectations, examining how individuals may or may not conform to social norms
Andre Brock Jr, Ratchetry and Racism in Distributed Blackness 2020
Total Institutions: introduced in "Asylums", refers to places where individuals are isolated from society and lead a regulated life e.g. prisons, boarding schools
-
Criticisms
Most significant critique: Goffman had interactions with a limited number of people and leaned towards a very subjective research methodology
overly descriptive and journalistic, seems to comment on observation rather than provide a critical/analytical approach - lacks theoretical depth
-
the 'dramaturgical approach' - uses theatre and drama as a metaphor for how we develop and present ourselves
aspects of the approach effected by time, place and audience
For Goffman, the word "self" was explained through the dramatic effect which came out when a situation presented itself
