elements, compounds, and mixtures
Elements
The meaning: Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances. They are the simplest form of matter and consist of only one type of atom.
The examples: Oxygen, Iron, helium, sodium, hydrogen, gold, carbon, calcium, etc.
The usage of each in daily life
Oxygen is for breathing
Iron is used for construction and for tools
Gold is used in jewelry
Aluminium is used for food packaging
The strengths and weaknesses
Strength
Gold: Malleability and Ductility, it can be shaped easy
Iron: is strong, making it good for tools and construction
Aluminium: Light weight and no corrosion
Weakness
Gold: the cost of gold is expensive
Iron: it can be rust, corrosion.
Aluminium: the strength is weak
Compound
The meaning: A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements chemically bond together
The examples:
Water (H₂O)
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
The usage of each in daily life:
Water (H₂O): for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and agriculture.
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂): it is for a refrigerant, in fire extinguishers, for inflating life rafts and life jackets. .
Sodium Chloride (NaCl): Used for seasoning food as a salt.
The strengths and weaknesses of each
strength
Water: for life needs, like drinking, watering plants
Carbon Dioxide: It is good for photosynthesis process
Sodium Chloride: Effective for flavoring and preserving food.
Weakness
Water: Can cause erosion, corrosion, and flood.
Carbon dioxide: it contributes to climate change by trapping heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming.
Sodium Chloride: Too much can cause health problems such as high blood pressure.
Mixtures
The meaning: a substance made by mixing other substances together.
The examples:
Sea water is a mixture of salt (sodium chloride) and water.
Dirt and water (Mud)
The usage of each in daily life
Sea water is used in salt production, which is used for cooking and for food.
Mud is used to create ceramics by clay, and mud is used for making bricks
The strengths and weaknesses:
Strength
Sea water: sea water is the habitat of aquatic plants and animals, Sea water is rich in mineral so that it can protect the skin
Mud: mud is easy to get because it is made from soil and water, so it is really efficient in making building material like bricks.
Weakness
Sea water: it is unsuitable for Drinking, and salt in sea water can cause corrosion in metals
Mud is not as strong or long-lasting as other building materials like concrete or steel
