scientific method & phases of matter & mixtures and solutions
Scientific Method
get
repeatable
and
reliable results
Step 4:
Record the RESULT: ensure you can compare the outcome of the test with others
Step 5
: CONFIRM the hypothesis
False
Partially Correct
True
Uncertain
Step 3:
The EXPERIMENT: control variables and write down the exact progress
Step 6:
Rethink and adjust - hypothesis / experiment / materials / quantities
Step 2
: Form a HYPOTHESIS - doing research that may be related to your problem.
not a guess
rather a prediction based on your
prior knowledge and research
Variables
are the factors that can change the outcome of the test and they are not necessarily related to the hypothesis
Step 1
: Starts with a PROBLEM or QUESTION
Phases of Matter
Solid
objects contain particles(atoms) that are most tightly packed together in a regular pattern
they do not move they simply vibrate in place
Liquid
they are held together by the container they are in.
they are packed closely enough that gravity holds them down
less tightly packed than solids don't hold a fixed pattern are able to slide past one another
Gas
will fill all the space in a container and will escape if it is not sealed
very loosely packed.
fly past each other. gravity can't hold them as they speed around. change direction when crash into each other.
when a liquid turn to a gas it is called
evaporation
when a gas turn to a liquid it is called
condensation
when a solid is turned into a gas or a gas turns into a solid it's called
sublimation
Example: Dry ice is just frozen carbon dioxide which turns directly from solid to gas
when a solid turns to liquid it is called
melting
when a liquid is turned into a solid it is called
freezing
Mixtures and solutions
dissolve
to combine 2 or more separate substances into a liquid form such that they can't be easily separated. it requires a chemical process to separate them again
soluble
if a substance can dissolve
Insoluble
if a substance can't be dissolved
solute
The substance that gets dissolved
suspension
when something can't dissolve and is evenly mixed
Solvent
The liquid that does the dissolving
saturation
when a solvent is full to the limed
solution
The result when dissolving takes place
mixture
it can be easily separated into its different parts
