Reflexive pronouns for emphasis
use reflexive pronouns to emphasis that someone in the sentence did the thing
The doctor gave me the medicine herself. (= This means the doctor did it and not anyone else. Maybe here we expect that the pharmacist might do it.)
I will cook dinner myself! (= I will cook and not anyone else.)
Possesive
's
and
of
generally use 'apostrophe + s' with people and animals.
Where's the dog's bed?
With countries, cities and other places, we can usually choose.
more normal to use 'apostrophe + s'. 'Of' tends to sound more formal.
She loves wandering through London's streets.
or
She loves wandering through the streets of London.
use 'of' with everything else.
He told her the price of the house.
Pronoun or determiner
Many determiners can be pronouns
either,both,some,any,another,many,much,a few,a little
I'll eat either sandwich.
I'll eat either.
use 'no' only as a determiner. The pronoun is 'none'.
There is no chocolate left.
There is none left.
don't usually use 'all' as a pronoun on its own.
He can fix all computers
NOT: He can fix all.
this
and
that
to talk about previous ideas
to talk about an idea or ideas that we've previously mentioned
'this' is a bit more common.
we tend to use 'that' in the expression 'that's why'.
It doesn't actually matter much if you choose 'this' or 'that'. Both are fine
use 'this' and 'that' even if we're referring back to more than one idea. We don't usually use 'these' and 'those' here.
