Davidson's Challenge Ideas
PFAS - Forever Chemicals?
Pros to idea:
in uk, currently no specific restrictions on PFAS in food, so largely unexplored
linked to a range of diseases, so would be beneficial to prevent use of pfas
chemicals that persist in environment
linked to liver damage, thyroid disease, fertility issues + cancer
often used in nonstick pans; water-repellent clothing; stain resistant fabrics and carpets + certain cosmetics
Cons to idea:
Not really covered in a-levels, so may need to do extra research
may need to design prototype
alternatives to pfas in certain products?
ways to clean water of pfas?

Digital Health Technology
using technology to make healthcare more accessible, personalised + precise
apps that track day to day life
wearable devices that monitor health
may be used by elderly

Pros of idea:
quite broad - versatility
a little outside of the box
Cons of idea:
Not really covered in a-levels, so may need to do extra research
this idea is more: finding a solution, then working backwards to the problem, which last year's group advised against.

Warzones
Malaria
Urgency: Due to global warming, the threat of vector-borne diseases such as malaria will soon not be a problem for countries close to the equator. Despite many physical defences and chemical repellents, solutions can be harmful to skin, be ineffective and expensive.
Repellent chemicals:
Citronella oil(contains citronellol, citernellal, and geranoil)
Nanoparticle encapsulation
Access to basic sanitation
Wound infectons
Infectious disease
Clean water
Birth mortality
Hospitals
Electricity. Often in the dark.
Limited equipment
Pros
Relevant today
Wide range of issues within chosen topic can be considered
Cons
Affordability+accessability -big factors which need to be considered at all times
May be too complex
