Education
Trevor was raised in a way that he was shown he could acomplish anything he had in mind and he in a way in which he felt he had no limitations due to his race or what he could do. In this time of racism and limitations for coloured people trevor felt as if he was raised like a white kid.
"My mom raised me as if there were no limitations on where I could go or what i could do. When I look back I realize she raised me like a white kid... that my ideas and thoughts and decisions mattered."
(p 73)
Variety in people
make
Trevor learns to fit in with different racial and cultural groups because he is a mixed-race child in South Africa. Even though he often feels like an outsider, he uses humor and speaks multiple languages to connect with his friends during fun activities, this helps shape his identity.

Trevor struggles with relationships, like the one with Babiki because their inability to communicate due to language barrier and cultural differences made their night awkward

When Trevor argued with his mothr she would ask him to write letters to communicate because she knew she couldnt win a verbal argument against Trevor so they would wirte leeters to each other when they argued as a way pof communication to solve their problems.
"By the time I was seven or eight i was too smart to be tricked, so she changed tactics ... So she started writting me letters " (p 82)
apartheid
Noahs mother had Noah during apartheid and had to raise him keeping a low profile, she had noah with a swiss white man while she was living in a white area of south africa because she refused to leave for apartheid this shows how resilient and hard headed Patricica is when It comes to beiliefs and social norms.
"My mom, however, was a rebel, and, fortunately for her, her rebellion came along at the right moment." (p 23)
Language
Trevor was going to get bullied but because he could speak the same African language as them they let him go.
"Oh, sorry dude. We thought you were something else... We were trying to steal from white people." (p 56)

"Thats when I learned: time is money. I realized people would pay me to buy their food because I was willing to run for it." (p 140)
This quote shows Trevors cheekyness and his clever insight on the lunch queue and how he could make money out of it.
Resourceful
One day it was raining outside and Trevor had to take a shit but the bathroom was outside the house in a shed that did not stop rain from coming in, so not to get wet and enjoy his shit trevor had it on a piece of newspaper on the kitchen floor and then threw it away.
"So thats what I did. I took the newspaper, laid it out on the kitchen floor, pulled down my pants, and squatted and got to it." (p 43)

Love
Noah used to hace a dog named fufi when he was younger and one day Fufi jumped the fence and got into a neighbours house, once trevor tried to get fufi back the neighbours wouldnt give her back and fufi wouldnt respond to trevor leaving him very sad. This taught him that you cant own a being and make them love you.
"I called to her, i begged her to come. fufi was deaf to my pleas" (p 99)

Patricia raises him to be confident and encourages him to challenge societal rules about race. By raising Trevor in a time when mixed-race relationships were illegal, she shows him the importance of resisting limitations, which inspires Trevor to be true to himself.
