French Revolution 1789
The French Revolution marks the overthrow of the Ancien Regime, led by the king, a system of state organisation in France before the French Revolution.
Ancient Regime
French people were subjects of the King
(King Louis XVI) and members of an estate
and province
3 estates: Clergy, nobility, all others
= third estate
peoples rights based on the estate
they belonged to instead of individual
rights

first estate = Clergy
people who ran the Catholic church
and aspects of the country; had the
power to levy a 10% tax = tithe
second estate = Nobility
members of the royal family ( except for king)
did not have to pay taxes, awarded special
privileges, collected taxes from third estate
third estate
peasant farmers to the wealthy business class-
96% of the population, none of the rights and privileges
as the other two estates
serfdom = the force of labour from landlords
to peasants/farmer to allow occupation of the land
