Environmental (China)
- Service provision is designed to use resources efficiently and to moderate or mitigate environmental impact (e.g. energy, land, water, flood defence, waste minimisation, etc.)
Where are we now?
China is investing in renewable energy. China is building and maintaining flood control projects. China is promoting a garbage sorting system.
How can we evidence this?
China's installed solar and wind energy capacity reaches approximately 253 GW and 328 GW. China's investment in flood control facilities has increased significantly. The garbage classification system implemented by Shanghai in 2019

- There is efficient use of resources with existing buildings designed to minimize their impact on the environment.
Where are we now?
Currently, the existing buildings are very bad in terms of using resources efficiently, having extreme impact on the environment.
How can we evidence this?
There are too many buildings that cause over usage of light due to very tall buildings requiring lights in many levels of the building. This causes light pollution, making stars not visible in most locations in the country. This leads to the difficulty in studying and observing the universe and destroys the ecological balance.
What actions are needed in order to achieve our 20 year vision?
Use efficient lighting equipment, such as LED lights, in the building, combined with natural lighting design.
- People live in a way that minimizes negative environmental impact and enhances positive impact (e.g. recycling, walking, cycling).
Where are we now?
The government promotes low-carbon travel activities and encourages citizens to choose walking, cycling and public transportation.
How can we evidence this?
China now has subways in more than 40 cities, with a total operating mileage of more than 7,000 kilometers.
What actions are needed in order to achieve our 20 year vision?
Support the development and promotion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
- Natural resources and biodiversity (e.g. air quality, noise, water, etc) are protected and improved.
Where are we now?
China is quite rich in natural resources already but biodiversity seems to vary according to different states. However, the are both slowly improving and being worked on.
How an we evidence this?
In China, the quality of natural resources and biodiversity depends on the type of resources or biodiversity, as well as the location. For example, the air quality in Shenzhen is very good while air quality in Xianyang needs much improvement.
What actions are needed in order to achieve our 20 year vision?
In 20 years, we want to be able to improve the biodiversity and natural resources in all states in China and to achieve this, they can maintain the good environmental conditions so that the resources biodiversity needs to improve is attainable.
- In making decisions now we have due regard to the needs of future generations.
Where are we now?
China has relied on the construction of infrastructure for economic growth, but it seems to have hit a limit. Infrastructure projects are no longer giving a significant return on investment, and the Chinese government has made and planned decisions for a slowdown.
How can we evidence this?
The government is moving their plans to the positive directions while considering the future impacts from these decisions. This is shown where they are taking sustained measures in transforming their transportation system to be smart and green. For example, electric buses, cars, and so on.
What actions are needed in order to achieve our 20 year vision
- Reduce the emissions from cars, power stations, etc.
- Sustain and build on recent improvements in air quality
In 20 years our community will care for and manage its environment and local people will be taking their part in tackling global climate change, living within environmental limits.
Do you agree with this statement?
We agree with this statement because the management is very good so people will work in a society to tackle global climate change.
How does it need to be amended to reflect how you would like your community to be 20 years?
We would like the community to improve their collaboration skills to work on their management together in order to create a stable living environment.
