When did you take your insulin
What was your last BLS reading?
Do you know your A1C levels
Do you monitor your BLS levels? How often?
Symptoms
Hypoglycemia
Confusion
Pounding heart
Moist,clamy hands
Sweating/cold
Palor
Vision problems
Hyperglycemia
Confusion
Rapid breathing
Fever
Dry skin
Sweet/fruity breath
Causes
Hypoglycemia
Vomited
Excessive insulin
Excessive heavily
Taken too much medication and patient did not eat
Hyperglycemia
Pt consumes too much sugar
Not taking meds
Stress
Infection
FPG levels
Normal Blood sugar levels; less than 100mg/dl
Diabetic patient; 126mg/dl or higher
Signs of Deterioration
Loss of consciousness
Vitals are unstable
Re-evaluate diagnosis; consider seizure, cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, CVA TIA
PABCD
Semi reclining
A/B; maintain open airway; administer O2 will not hurt but usually necessary
C; Monitor pulse and blood pressure
D; administer oral glucose, monitor vitals, and activate EMS
Signs of Recovery
Patient appears more alert
