· A washing machine is a computer because it has the 4 components: inputs, processes, outputs & storage.
o It takes INPUTS: button and dial inputs from the user, water level sensor and temperature sensor.
o It PROCESSES sequences of instructions that tell it how to fill with water, extract detergent, spin and drain the drum.

· Increasing the speed of your computer: the slower it is, the longer it takes to complete an FDE cycle.
o Increase the clock speed – measures how fast the CPU completes each FDE cycle and is measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz), where 1GHz = 1000MHz. The higher the clock speed, the more FDE cycles can be performs in a second.

A computer system is a set of hardware and software devices which can input, process, output and store data. A smartphone is a type of computer.
· Hardware – the physical part of the computer that you can touch. For example, a mouse.
· Software – something that is on the computers but you cannot see working.
o Operating System - the piece of software each computer needs to run. It manages the hardware and the rest of the software. Examples include: iOS, Android & Windows.
o Application Software – the pieces of software on a computer that the user (you!) wants to use. They can be different for everyone depending on your interest and what you use your device for. Examples include: Facebook, Snapchat, Powerpoint, Microsoft word & many more.
o Utility Software – software used to clean, organise, protect and keep your computer running smoothly. You don’t need this software, but it helps your computer last longer without problems. Examples include: Antivirus (Norton & McAfee), File Management Systems, Disk Defragmenter (rearranging files and storing them

o Volatile – everything in your memory will be lost when the computer is turned off. An example is RAM.
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) fetches instructions from the storage, decodes and then executes them.
-
o Primary – main memory that is closest to and directly accessed by the CPU. Examples include: RAM, ROM & Cache
o Secondary - outside of a computer system and are always non-volatile. Examples include: Floppy disk, Hard drive, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, Solid State Drive & Memory stick.

· A washing machine and a computer both have a CPU, however this doesn’t make a washing machine and computer the same thing.
o Non-Volatile - Your files and storage will stay on your computer even after your computer is off. Examples are: ROM, Floppy disk, Hard drive, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, Solid State Drive & Memory stick.
