Structures of a vegetable basket
Vegetable baskets can be made out of wood, steel or plastic. the material needs to be strong enough to support the vegetables inside it and not bruise them. it is typically in the shape of a circle or an oval.
The learners will make a vegetable basket out of paper and draw vegetables, cut them out and carry them in the basket
Vegetable baskets are made for carrying your vegetables from one place to another or to store them all in one place for easy access
All plants need space to grow, the right temperature, light, water, air, nutrients, and time
The children will make a graph that shows the different components needed to make sure your vegetables grow
Step 1: Choose Your Seeds
Step 2: Gather Your Equipment.
Step 3: Prepare the Soil.
Step 4: Sow Your Seeds.
Step 5: Provide Proper Care.
Step 6: Transplant Your Seedlings.
People use a method called canning to preserve the vegetables from their garden.
The teacher will show the children pictures of the different steps of how we process vegetables. The learners will then have to put the pictures in chronological order
Processing makes food more edible, palatable and safe, and preserves it so it can be eaten beyond the harvest season
Some vegetables, like cauliflower, grow from flowers
Draw your favourite vegetable and explain why it is your favorite
Vegetables are parts of plants that are consumed by humans or other animals as food
Some vegetables are sweet, like sweet potato and corn, while other vegetables taste a bit grassy, like broccoli and avocado
The teacher will bring different vegetables and have the learners feel them and describe their texture
Certain vegetables like carrots are hard and crisp while vegetables like peas are soft and mealy.
Some vegetables like avocados grow on trees while other like tomatoes grow in the ground
The learners will get 5 photos of different vegetables and place them in the correct category of vegetables
We get leafy green, marrow and root vegetables
At first manual labour was used but in time livestock were domesticated and the ground could be turned by the plough. More recently, mechanisation has revolutionised vegetable farming with nearly all processes being able to be performed by machine.
Create your own vegetable farm by using a small Tupperware container and adding soil and some seeds. The children will learn how to farm vegetables
Vegetable farming is the process of growing vegetables so humans can eat it
Seeds are alive but in a sort of suspended animation until the conditions are just right for them to sprout. Once they do sprout – we call sprouting “germination” – roots and stems emerge from each seed, followed by its first set of leaves.
Show how the different seeds from vegetables look like and have the children draw the different seeds next to a drawing, they will draw themselves, of the vegetable it belongs to
Specialized farmers grow crops to harvest their seeds rather than harvesting them for produce. They clean the seeds, then dry them down to the point where the seeds are still alive but are dry enough to store and transport
Birds and herbivores help with the transport of the vegetables seeds by dispersing them through the seeds clinging onto their fur or feathers. The seeds then make it to fertile ground where it can then begin to grow into a plant and then into a vegetable
Make a poster about a dispersal method of vegetables. Example, the role wind plays in dispersing the seeds of vegetables
The most common methods are wind, water and animals.
