Vegetables
Natural Science
- Plant Growth and Nutrition (DoBE, 2011)
- Key Concept: Understand how vegetables grow and the nutrients they need.
- Activity: Grow a vegetable plant from seeds in the classroom. Learners observe the growth stages and keep a plant diary, tracking sunlight, water, and growth.
- Key Concept: Learn about different parts of a vegetable plant (roots, stems, leaves, etc.).
- Activity: Dissect a real vegetable (like a carrot) and identify the different parts. Use labels and pictures to help understand.
Social Science
- Key Concept: Explore how and where vegetables are grown and the role of farming in the community.
- Activity: Learners create a simple map showing a farm with vegetable plots and nearby markets where vegetables are sold. They will describe the journey of vegetables from farm to table.
- Vegetables Around the World
- Key Concept: Learn about vegetables that are common in different cultures and countries.
- Activity: Create a class poster in groups showing vegetables from different parts of the world, using images and labels. Each group can present one vegetable and where it's grown and which countries have the same vegetables
Technology
- Design a vegetable Garden
- Key Concept: Use design thinking to plan a small vegetable garden in the classroom or find a good spot on the field or in the school gardens.
- Activity: Learners draw a design for a vegetable garden, labeling where different vegetables will grow. They consider factors like spacing, sunlight, and water access.
- Key Concept: Learn about the different tools used to grow vegetables, like spades, watering cans, and forks.
- Activity: Learners create their own mini gardening tools using recyclable materials (e.g., cardboard, plastic bottles) and explain how each tool is used. These tools could be used if the learners create their own veggie garden.
