How seeds and vegetables are dispersed
Information: Plants cannot walk around and take their seeds to other places, so they have developed other methods to disperse (move) their seeds. The most common methods are wind, water, animals, explosions, and fire. {Science learning hub,2014)
Class activity: The class will make small seed air propellers and we will then go outside when it is a windy day and release the seed propellers and see where each of them lands.
This will help us to develop and learn of ways that seeds are dispersed and how it travel from different surfaces or animals
Vegetable farming
Information: Springtime is the best time to grow vegetables. Growing of vegetable crops, primarily for use as human food. Vegetable farming operations range from small patches of crops, producing a few vegetables for family use or marketing, to the great highly organized and mechanized farms common in industrialized countries.(Britannica,2021)
Class activity: At this activity we will attempt to create our own vegetable garden. We will get gardening soil, our vegetable seeds and make our own little garden which the children will attend to every day.
This method will provide us with food that we can eat. It will help us to still get our nutrition in and help us to be heathy
Natural Science
Different types of vegetables
Class activity: Children will be asked to bring some kind of vegetable to the class and show the class theor vegetable and why they choose it. It will also then after be compared with the other vegetables. Children will learn the types of vegetables there is and the sizes of each of them.
Information: There are root vegetables, stem vegetables, edible tubers, head or flower vegetables, fruits commonly considered vegetables by their use (cucumbers, eggplants, sweet corn), and seed vegetables (peas, beans). ( Britannica,2024)
This will help us to discover new vegetables that we did not yet know about and how to treat it better.
Where vegetables comes from
Information: the term vegetable usually refers to the fresh edible portions of certain herbaceous plants—roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit, or seeds. These plant parts are either eaten fresh or prepared in a number of ways, usually as a savory, rather than sweet, dish.:
Class activity: Children will be making a vegtable garden together with the vegettable seeds that was brought. They will then maintain the vegetable garden for the whole year and we will look every week for the progress that has been made.
This will help to learn more about where we can find and place vegetables. It can also help us to learn of new vegetables
Technology
Structure and shape for a vegetable garden.
Information: You will divide your garden into 4 sections. Each section will be its bed for certain types of vegetables. These garden vegetables will need to be able to grow well together and have similar needs. It’s essential to plan and organize your vegetable seeds before planting them in the garden if using this layout plan. By ensuring you’re never growing the same crop in the same space over consecutive years, this tactic helps keep your soil healthy while naturally managing pests and diseases.(Westwood gardens,2024)
Class activity: We will attempt to create our own vegetable garden using carton boxes and play vegetables before we go outside to create our own vegetable garden. Children will have access to soil, play vegetables and things they can use to plan what they will do when attempting to make the vegetable garden.
Prosessing of vegetables
Information: The goal of processing is to deter microbial spoilage and the natural physiological deterioration of the plant cells. Generally, the techniques include blanching, dehydrating, canning, freezing, fermenting and pickling, and irradiating. (Singh, R,2021).
Class activity:Here we will create a whole section where we pretend to wash, sort, and package the vegetables. Each child will have a turn and then when it is packaged the remaining learners will take it to our shop on the other side of the classroom where the learners can buy the vegetables
This will help us to develop new skills that we can use to improve the processing of vegetables and design new ideas to develop better ways of doing it.
