Chapter 16: Research Proposal
Components and Format
Many funders from federal to private may require a specific format for the proposal. Follow directions exactly as describe to avoid disqualifications.
The proposal should answer the following question:
Why this project?
Why you?
Why your institution?
Why this sponsor?
Why now?
The proposal should include these following sections:
Abstract
Specific aims
Background, including statement of need.
Research design
Significance/Impact
These sections are in every proposal , but may be called differently and may include additional sections like Budget and an Innovation section.
Abstract
The abstract should cover the following: Background, unknown or problem/statement of need, Overall objective of the proposal, General strategy, and Significances/Impact.
This section will summarize the research article highlighting key points from the article.
The abstract should be concise and detailed but be written in one paragraph. The first and last sentence is the power of position, this will provide important details to reader to captivate them with a significance or impactful statement
It is important to make sure a statement of need is made otherwise the proposal will not be convincing enough to the readers to fund the research.
Overview
Before composing a propose you must research founders priorities and establish a connection between the projects goals and agency's interest.
The proposal should be thorough in the need, the proposed problem, and the solution of your research and tie in the organization qualification for implementing the solution.
Research Design
Describe the approach for each specific aim in detail
Organize the sections into subsections according to your specific aims
Impact and Significance
End the proposal with a broad impact statement, focus on how this may benefit humans.
Additional Components
Cost should be realistic and justified.
Budget for materials, equipment, personnels, travel, and facilities.
