types of diffusion
expansion diffusion
Hierarchical diffusion
Contagious diffusion
direct contact with a carrier, strongly influenced by distance (e.g Ebola endemic)
disease spreads through an ordered sequence of places, from the largest centres with the highest connectivity to the smaller, more isolated centres. Often transported through transport networks (e.g H1N1 flu virus)
Relocation diffusion
The spreading disease moves into new areas, leaving behind its origin or source of disease (origin moves into new area ) (e.g cholera epidemic Haiti)
Source stays in one place as the disease expands, carriers in the source area will remain infected (e.g TB and Spanish Flu)
Neighbourhood effect
the probability of contrast between a carrier and a non-carrier is determined by the number of people living in each 5 x 5 km grid
