Science Knowledge Organiser
Earths Composition
Atmosphere, crust, mantle, inner core, outer core
Humans can extract resources from the crust and the atmosphere.
The most abundant gasses in the atmosphere are nitrogen, oxygen and argon.
Rock Cycle
Igneous
When molten rock from the mantle cools on the surface
Contains crystals, impermeable to water
Granite, diorite, basalt
Metamorphic
When existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure underground.
Grainy, brittle, no crystals, impermeable
Slate, schist, marble
Sedimentary
Small bits of rock break of of larger rocks (sediment). The sediment travels through rivers into lakes or oceans. More bits of sediment start to create layers and the pressure it causes makes rock
Crumbly, layers, fossils, porous
Limestone, sandstone
Recycling
Reuse, reduce, recycle
Renewable - Won't run out, can use it again
Wood, wool, cotton, paper,
Finite - Will eventually run out, once it's gone, it's gone
Gold, coal, petrol, plastic, aluminium iron
What can you recycle at home?
Certain plastics, paper, cardboard, glass
Carbon Cycle
Carbon dioxide makes up 0.04% of the atmosphere
Carbon travels from the atmosphere, into organisms, back into the atmosphere over and over again
