Ulcerative Colitis
Usually begins in the rectum with lesions developing in mucus-secreting goblet cells in the base of the mucosal layer (Crypts of Leiberkuhn).
-
The inflammatory process affects primarily the mucosal layer but can extend to the submucosal layer.
-
-
In time the walls of the colon become thickened and fibrous leading to narrowing of the lumen and possible obstruction.
-
Appendictits
Obstruction of the lumen by hard stool, tumour, foreign body, torsion (twisting)
The pressure in the appendix increases due to mucosal secretions continuing to be produced and bacterial overgrowth occurs.
-
Leading to decreased mucosal blood flow, hypoxia, ischemia and necrosis
Damage to the wall of the appendix leads to bacteria and toxins leaking out causing an abscess or local peritonitis
Eventually, the appendix will perforate causing its content to empty into the peritoneal cavity generalised peritonitis
