Introduction (5 minutes)
-
Play a short animated YouTube video explaining how the heart pumps blood, providing a visual overview of the circulatory system
-
-
Lesson Activities
Individual and Paired Activity (10 minutes):
Let students explore the BioDigital Human simulation using computers in the ICT lab. Allow them to discuss with their shoulder partners. Have them rotate the 3D heart model, zoom into different chambers, and trace the path of blood through the circulatory system.
Assign tasks such as identifying the path of oxygenated blood or tracing blood flow to the lungs.
-
-
Students will perform a simple hands-on activity by measuring their pulse rate at rest and after some light physical activity.
Use an online simulation to compare their pulse rates with the average human heart rate, reinforcing the connection between physical activity and heart function
-
Interactive Quiz (5 minutes):
Conduct a Kahoot! quiz with questions on the circulatory system. Include questions on the heart’s structure, the function of arteries and veins, and the movement of oxygenated vs. deoxygenated blood.
-
Implementation
-
• Gradually move to interactive simulations (BioDigital Human), allowing students to explore and visualize the circulatory system.
-
-
Differentiation
Provide additional support for students needing more time with simulations by offering further explanation or one-on-one guidance.
-
Evaluation
Formative Assessment
Monitor students during the simulation activity and observe their ability to identify key structures and explain circulation concepts.
-
Summative Assessment
-
Review group activity outcomes, focusing on their ability to navigate and explain the online simulation models.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the child will be able to
• Understand how blood circulates in the body, including the roles of the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries
-
-
Learner Characteristics
Grade V students, aged 10-12 years, familiar with basic human body systems but new to detailed concepts like circulation
Different learning preferences: visual, auditory, kinesthetic learners
Learning Environment
The classroom is equipped with a projector, smartboard, and ICT lab
Lesson Follow Up
Have students share what they learned about the circulatory system through the simulations.
Lesson Closure
Lesson Closure
Use their quiz and group activity results to gauge overall understanding and provide personalized feedback.
