Meaning of Democracy
It is the government of the people, by the people and for the people
It is the type of political system wherein the laws, leadership, policies, practices and the major undertakings of the government are being indirectly or directly decided by the common people
Nations like India, Japan, Australia, Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, New Zealand and others actively practice democracy
Within this political system, the people hold all the power, and their elected representatives form the government and subsequently, govern the nation on behalf of them

Popular Sovereignty is an important feature of democracy since the common people hold the maximum power and their representatives who run the government are elected through fair and free elections
Everyone is considered equal and thus, the laws are applicable to everyone irrespective of their background and position within the nation
People are offered various fundamental rights like equality rights, freedom rights and others and the government have the responsibility of ensuring that the people are able to exercise these rights
There is a separation of power in the government because of which it has different branches like judiciary, legislative, executive and others
