Adolescent Sexual risk Factors Predicting Condom
With nearly have of the estimated 19 million STIs each year being in the you ages 15-21 it is important to examine what the factors are that are causing this.
The Transtheoretical Model describes Stages of Change and attempts to explain individuals change and how this change can be predicted and facilitated.
There are 5 stages of change. They are precontemplatation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance.
There are for the most part self explanatory. The first 3 stages are an individual is considering or preparing to change. The last 2 are acting on the change and working on it.
The Theory of planned Behavior suggest that subjective norms are important factors related to stages of change
For example knowing that peers are engaging in and value a low-fat diet has been associated with painting a low-fat diet.
The theories below try and explain the factors.
The 2 theories are consistent with the findings of Conistent and Inconsistent Condom users through the pros and cons and peer norms for condom use.
It was found that the most important factor to lead to the progress between the stages as the pros and cons of condom use. The pros outweighed the cons and the change shifted to more condom use.

Social and Behavioral Science and Public Health.
Socioeconomic status affects health. It has been shown that areas of higher socioeconomic status have a longer life expectancy that areas with a lower status.
Social and behavioral science developed along side public health with the same belief that understanding the organization and motivation behind social forces, along with a better understanding of the behavior of individuals, can be used to improve the lives of individuals, as well as society as a whole. - copied directly from the book.
People of higher socioeconomic status have greater access to healthcare, improved sanitation, less crossing, and safer methods of handling food. Also that people from lower status are more likely to be exposed to health hazards while at work.
This does not explain the life expectancy. Further research is needed to explain that. As chronic conditions are also different without a known explanation.
Individual health behaviors can change. This has en shown by the theory Stages of Change Model.
Culture also has an affect on health. Cultures define what is bad and what is good and also control eating habits. Also how people treat health issues.
religion plays a role in health as well. Religions ban the use of things such as condoms, alcohol, and tobacco which all have affects on health.
Health behaviors are hard to change in an individual but many major health factors have changed over long periods of time. Such as smoking which was about 50% in the 60s compared to about 15% today.
Religion also affects how people get treatment and if medical practices are even allowed. For example some religions ban blood transfusions and abortion.
