All forms of AI should be banned in education
For
AI tools can encourage students to be lazy, by writing their essays, solving their Maths questions etc.
This can lead to plagarism - this can result in qualifications being taken away
Ethical considerations behind this - cheating is wrong
Reliance on AI could make people less intelligent over time - they constantly ask ChatGPT and such for simple questions instead of answering themselves
By generating ideas/improving writing through generative AI, people are becoming less creative, asking AI for answers - it is already trained on existing work
Students may not develop the skills needed for a particular subject: i.e. by asking AI to pick out the key points in an academic paper, rather than doing it themselves
Potentially decreased attention span of students
Whilst AI can teach, it lacks the connection between student and teacher. If AI takes over teaching, then there will be no connection, and schools will become mundane
learning depersonalised
potentially affecting social skills
look at the effect smartphones have had
Inequality in access - increased digital divide
some students won't be able to access AI tools, and this will deepen the unfair divide within education
privacy concerns - can collect lots of data from students - as it is not regulated, could have some privacy concerns; may be misused or mishandled
Against
AI tools can be used to teach
Google Classroom rolling out AI generated lessons - which gives teachers more time to work on other things to benefit the students, instead of spending vast amounts of time planning lessons
Chat GPT 4o - voice mode, you can send a photo of a Maths problem, and it will work through it step by step
Custom GPTs can be used to specialise in teaching specific areas
AI can provide personalised learning experiences - ChatGPT allows you to customise how it will respond, and now stores data about you in its memory, so it can give you information relevant to you
AI such as ChatGPT provide a run-time environment for code, and can identify problems with it, in some cases. This saves time having to go on forums such as stack overflow -> more time for the students to continue developing
AI can be used for marking
The process of marking is extremely time consuming - having AI to do this allows more time to be freed up for teachers
Although you could ban it - students will find a workaround - integrating AI into education is almost inevitable
