16.1: Overview

FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY!
Answer these questions:
Why this project?
Why you?
Why at your institution?
Why this sponsor?
Why now?
Format:
Abstract
Specific aims
Background (include statement of need)
Research Design
Significance/Impact
16.3: Abstract
Brief synopsis of background, problem, need, strategy and impact.
Pay special attention to first and last sentence to draw audience in and leave with with them wanting to answer need.
Statement of need is key. DO NOT LEAVE THIS OUT!
Make sure the overall goal of research is clearly stated.
16.4: Specific Aims
Be very detailed using precise language in the explanation of what the intent of the research is.
Do list form instead of paragraph.
Can provide a brief explanation after points.
This should include preliminary result or rationale, hypothesis and approach.
Italicizing hypothesis will set it apart.
State expected outcomes in final sentence.
16.5: Background
PROVIDE CONTEXT!
Current state of knowledge.
Convince the reader that this research will make a significant impact/result in advancements.
Does it affect a broader amount of subjects than yours specifically?

16.6: Research Design
Describe experimental approach for each aim in
DETAIL
.
Use sections here too:
Rationale/hypothesis
Experimental design (HOW?)
How data will be analyzed
Expected results
16.7: Impact & Significance
Make a broad statement.
Emphasize the impact and significance of results
Focus on the benefits to all humans and not just your research.
16.8: Additional Proposal Components
If amount requested should be included, make sure it is realistic and justified
Research materials, equipment, facilities, personnel, travel, everything involved - DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE WHAT IT WILL COST!
16.9: Checklist
Is topic original?
Are all required components there? (16.3-16.7)
Is abstract short and to the point while containing all important sections?
Is objective made clear?
Is the problem/unknown clear?
Is experimental design clear?
