CRIME AND DEVIANCE - LEFT REALISM (BOOKLET 1) - Coggle Diagram
CRIME AND DEVIANCE - LEFT REALISM (BOOKLET 1)
critical of marxists; saw crime as a real issue, wanting to recognise who's most affected (poor in inner-city deprived)
saw the poor as having highest fears of being victims of crime
also see white-collar/ corporate aren't paid much attention as they aren't seen to affect anyone much
LEA AND YOUNG
RELATIVE DEPRIVATION
people compare themselves to others to determine deprivation
can lead to discontent, frustration; they feel like they are behind those similar to them
MARGINALITY
due to economical strain, people feel on the edges of society due to low education, unemployment, lack of involvement
combined with relative deprivation can lead to anti-social behaviour, as they don't have much options to take out frustrations due to exclusion
SUBCULTURES
collectivist solutions to marginality + relative deprivation, and can be motivators for crime, as they present offending as acceptable
TOXIC MIX - YOUNG
everyone is included in consumer culture (cultural inclusion)
for lower classes, culture inclusion comes with social and economic exclusion as they can't afford much
'bulimic society'
- young people are exposed to media advertisement, but cannot indulge due to economic circumstances, leading to frustration, resentment, anger
relative deprivation is worsened by
three features
growing individualism
weakened informal social control
economic inequality
EVALUATION
uses a range of theories for a more clearer explanation
feminists
- a 'gender blind' theory, ignores crimes females are likely to be victims of; 'malestream criminology'
doesn't explain why most deprived youth don't turn to crime (deterministic)
