Week 7 Readings
Chapter 4: this chapter is about social and behavioral sciences and public health
Relationships between Public health and social and behavioral sciences. Both of these fields developed in the 19th century and were focused on addressing social inequalities.
Impact of Social system on health. Social systems shape health in many ways such as social norms which influence health behaviors, social control which maintains public health and safety, encouraging coping strategies for people to help with stress and anxiety.
It also talks about SES which is ones Socioeconomic Status. It shows that those who have a higher income are healthier. This is because of their living conditions.
Culture and Health can also play a role. Culture influences ones lifestyle, food, and response to medical problems. An example that I have learned in class is that insurance is actually more expensive in the south region of the US because the food is so much more unhealthy compared to the rest of the US. Where as insurance in California, a better dieted state, will relativity be cheaper.
Religion can also play a role on health. The example the book gives is that some religions require male circumcision which can lead to diseases such as HIV/AIDS
It is important that individuals start taking personal responsibility of their health. This includes following simple laws such as following the speed limit. Also receiving care like mammograms.
Individual health can be changed by intervention techniques
Vaccines are another method that can really help improve the nations overall health. However not everyone wants to get one. This is where vaccine education comes in letting the patients know the benefits and risks of the vaccine.
We can also add incentives to those who agree to receive the vaccine such as financial incentives.
Adolescent Sexual Risk: Factors Predicting Condom Use Across the Stages of Change
Transtheoretical Model (TTM)-
Developed by Prochaska and DiClemente. It identifies the five stages of change. The more confident individuals become in safe techniques the more they maintain those safer behaviors. Those who do not practice the safer behaviors push the boundaries.
Precontemplation
contemplation
preparation
action
maintenance
Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)-
includes peer influences. If everyone else is doing it, so should I. I could see where this could also backfire if everyone is not practicing safe sex.
Some challenges in promoting safe sex include communication and agreement between the two individuals participating.
Condom use varies depending on gender, race, and relationship status. Males and younger teens more often use condoms rather than females and older teens. More established relationships are less likely to use condoms while newer ones are.
The overall results and goal of the study is to increase the condom use of teens no matter what.
