During 1923, the government used 30 paper mills and 130 print firms to produce notes of higher denominations. Demand was so great that the government had to resort to the use of printing presses to produce money. In January 1922, the largest note in circulation was 10,000 Marks. By November 1923, it was 1 trillion marks. By mid 1923, money had become effectively worthless. Money ceased to be of use and many Germans resorted to ‘bartering’, as goods retained their value, while the value of money was constantly declining.
