Key Concepts and Theoretical Underpinnings
Theoretical Framework
A set of concepts, theories, ideas, and assumptions that provide a foundation for understanding a particular phenomenon or problem
Components of Theoretical Framework
• Concepts: Abstract ideas or generalizations representing objects, events, or phenomena
• Variables: Measurable and observable aspects of a concept
Beliefs or statements taken for granted
Statements explaining relationships between concepts and variables
• Hypotheses: Testable predictions derived from the theoretical framework
• Constructs: Abstract concepts inferred from observable variables
Types of Theoretical Frameworks
• Conceptual Framework: Defines key concepts and relationships between them
• Deductive Framework: Starts with a general theory or hypothesis and uses data to test and refine it
• Inductive Framework: Develops a theory or hypothesis based on patterns and themes from data
• Empirical Framework: Focuses on the collection and analysis of empirical data
• Normative Framework: Defines norms or values guiding behavior or decision-making
• Explanatory Framework: Seeks to explain underlying mechanisms or causes of phenomena
Importance of Theoretical Framework
• Guides Research: Helps design and conduct research, and analyze and interpret findings
• Contextualizes Research: Situates research within a broader theoretical perspective
• Identifies Gaps: Highlights gaps in existing knowledge
• Supports Analysis: Provides a foundation for interpreting results and making generalizations
