Natural Science
Animals
According to Flannery (08.10.2021) the animals are preparing for a long winter ahead. They are getting ready for migrating, mating and storing food. They store food for hibernating through the winter. All species prepare in different ways.
One key concept: Hibernation and migration are ways for the animals to survive during the winter times ahead. In the winter the food are scarce and it is very cold so they have to prepare themselves in the autumn.
Resources: Cut-outs of different animals, different habitats and different foods.
Activity: We will discuss the different animals, food and habitats. The children will put the animals and their food with their correct habitat.
Natural science concept: The children will understand the connection between the animals and their environment. They will also understand what the animals need to survive during Autumn.
Plants and trees
According to the story about trees in autumn (16.09.2024) when autumn progresses the leaves change color and the trees start to drop their leaves fully, they enter hibernation. This means that the leaves does not have any more chlorophyll and the leaves will start to shed from the tree.
One key concept: When the leaves are being shed and the color of the leaves start to change it means that there are a reduction of photosynthesis.
Resources: a piece of paper and leaves the children collects from the schoolgrounds.
Activity: I will talk about the trees and plants that looses their leaves. Then i will ask the children to go outside and collect all the different leaves they can find. Then they can paste it on their paper. Discuss the reduction of photosynthesis.
Natural science concept: The learners will understand why the leaves changes color.
Social science
Human adaption
According to twinkl (2010) the weather turns colder in autumn. The people starts to wear coats and sometimes even scarves and hats.

Resources: Cut-outs of dolls and different clothes.
Activity: Each child will get a doll and choose clothes for the doll that he/she thinks the doll may need in Autumn.
Social science concept: They will learn that when the weather changes, it affects the clothing we wear.
Agriculture
According to Dicla Agri Machinery (2024) in autumn it is time to harvest the summer crops like maize and sunflowers and plant the winter crops like wheat and barley.
One key concept: Crop rotation cycle, how the crops are planted and harvested in autumn.
Resources: Seeds, soil and the bottom piece of a 2L cooldrink bottle.
Activity: Each child needs to bring a 2L cooldrink bottle to school and i will bring the seeds and the soil. We will plant the seeds and watch how the seeds grow. (I will plant a seed in a bottle a few months before and take pictures of the growth and then i will show the kids how theirs will grow and then we will harvest mine.) We will also discuss what the farmers do.
Social Science concept: The children will understand where food comes from and what the farmer needs to do on the farm.
Technology
Farming tools
According to AgriSETA (2006) when you want to harvest maize, sunflowers, wheat and soybean you need combine harvesters to harvest the whole plant. These harvesters usually has fast moving rollers and blades.

Resources: Farming tools that the children bring from home.
Activity: I will ask the learners to bring toy farming tools from home, if they have any. Then i will discuss the different tools with the children and i will also discuss the bigger machinery with the children. I will show them videos of the big harvest machines.
Technology concept: They understand that the big machines are technology tools that make harvesting easier and faster.
Renewable energy
According to the University of Massachusetts Amberst (2024) wind energy is strongest in Autumn, Winter, Summer including at night time when the air flow are increased because of the hot air that rises.

Resources: Cardboard and a type of fan.
Activity: The children will build a small wind turbine model with cardboard and a fan to stimulate wind. I will show the learners a video about wind turbines and then they will discuss why it is important in Autumn.
Technology concept: They will get the opportunity to build a wind turbine and learn the importance of renewable energy.
