Activity:
The teacher uses the social science learning cycle to conduct this activity. In the first phase: Exploration, the teacher sets a table with fresh vegetables and cooked vegetables and the learners use their senses to explore the vegetables. The learners describe the tastes and textures of the vegetable and compares the cooked vegetables with the fresh vegetables. The following vegetables will be used:
carrots, beetroot, tomatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. In the next phase: Knowledge and skill development, the teacher will present a board of the vegetables that includes textures and will discuss each texture. In the third phase: Knowledge and skill application, the learners will then make their own vegetable salad. The social science cycle introduced by George Maxim is a learner-centred approach intended to help learners achieve their maximum potential through problem solving and at the same time through teacher and peer assistance (Naude and Meier, 2016:42).
