- asserting a social status
- keeping appearances
- looking after a family
Contrast between morality and hypocrisy:
ex. going to church in the morning (appear
respectable) and then going clubbing at night

To be accomplished in life and respected from other u had to be ownership of a comfortable house with servants and regular attendance at church
WOMEN

Women had to obey the source of authority (husband)
but they still needed to control family budget and
brought up children

In the 19th century, british people not only
believed that there were different races, but that they were
the superior one
There were a powerful belief that races were
divided by fundamental physical and intellectual
differences
