Vegetables
Natural Science
Tastes and textures
of vegetables
Key Concept: Tasting and testing
different vegetables help learners develop their senses.
Activity: I will have carious crunchy and soft
vegetables cut up into pieces with corresponding pictures of the vegetables. I will have two boxes labelled crunchy and soft. The leaners will taste the vegetables and then put their pictures either in either the crunchy or soft box.
Colours and shapes
of vegetables
Key Concept: Shapes help us
indentify the different types of vegetables.
Activity: I will have print outs of different
shapes of vegetables long, round and oval.
I will have the leaners place similar shaped
vegetables together.
Social Science
Where vegetables
come from?
Key Concept:
Vegetables grow on farms.
Activity: I will have the
children plant bean seeds
in potted plant containers. Over
time they can observe how
it grows and how it needs
water, sunlight and good
soil to grow.
Different types of vegetables
Key Concept: Vegetables can grow
both underground and above ground.
Activity: I will have pots of soil
in the classroom with laminated
cut outs of vegetables that grow both
underground and above ground.
I will show the learners a video showing the different types. I will then allow them to plant their laminated vegetables wither above or underground.
Technology
Different types of vegetables
Key Concept: Learning how
to preserve vegetables so they
don't spoil or go bad.
Activity: I will have three types of
vegetables set up on a table. I will cut them up and lay half of them on trays and have the learners predict which vegetable will last the longest. I will put the other half into jars along with spices and vinegar and lemon juice. We will keep them in the fridge observing them each day. We will discuss how the vinegar will make the vegetables last longer and this process is called preservation.
Tastes and textures
of vegetables
Key Concept: Freezing vegetables
can create a longer lifespan.
Activity: I will have vegetables such as peas, carrots and
sweetcorn. I will have all the learners touch and taste. I will then put them into the freezer whilst asking them to predict what will happen to the vegetables. I will take the frozen vegetables out of the freezer and have the leaners touch them discussing how this process will allow us to keep certain vegetables for longer.
