chapter 3
Jonas thinks about his eyes' color and the strange thing that happened before, when he saw the apple that he was tossing with Asher changed color in the air."Just for an instant.It had changed in mid-air, he remembered."(p.30)
Father brought Gabriel to their home and cared for him. He also tells Lily that Birthmothers never get to see the new born. "But Father was busy unstrapping the carrying basket from the back of his bicycle."(p.25)
Asher played throw and catch the apple with Jonas, but his hand eye coordination wasn't good so he missed the apple for several times. He didn't notice the change of the apple. "Asher had just dropped it once again."(p.31)
Lily was interested in Gabriel, the baby at the nurturing center. She teased Jonas for having the same eyes color, which is pale, as Gabriel. "OH,LOOK!Isn't he cute?Look how tiny he is!"(p.25)
Mom told Lily about the job as a Birthmother, and say that there's little honor in that job."Don't say that. There's very little honor in that Assignments."(p.27)
chapter 5
Jonas tells his family that he had a dream of himself wanting to bathe his friend Fiona, after knowing that it was his first Stirrings, he starts eating pills for treatment. "...he explained quickly...'I wanted to bathe her."(p.45)
In Jonas's dream, Fiona kept laughing and saying no when he tried to convince her to get into the tub of water."...But she wouldn't. She kept laughing and saying no."(p.45)
Mother explains to Jonas that his dream was his first stirring and gave him pills for him to eat."...the feeling you described as wanting? It was your first Stirrings."(p.47)
Father listened to Jonas's dream and tried to get out from the situation by asking Lily to walk with him on the way to school."Lily, it's time to leave for school. Would you beside me this morning..."(p.46)
chapter 12
Fiona and Jonas rode together toward the House of the Old. Jonas noticed that her hair's color changed when she hurried toward the entrance of it."This time it had been Fiona who had undergone that fleeting indescribable change...it wasn't Fiona in her entirety. It seemed to be just her hair."(p.114)
The Giver tested Jonas about whether he could see color and later answered Jonas's question and told him about color. He gave Jonas the memory of rainbow and to help him with the concept of the color."Once, back in the time of the memories...they also had a quality called color."(p.119)
Mother asked Jonas if he slept soundly at night and complained that Gabriel is so fretful at night."So do I,'Mother said, rolling her eyes.'He's so fretful at night."(p.110)
Jonas had a dream of sliding down a hill. He saw Fiona's hair changed and asks The Giver about it. The Giver tested him and told him that before everything went to sameness, there was something called color. "Something about her changed for a second. Her hair looked different..."(p.115)
chapter 16
Jonas get a memory of people celebrating Christmas that was filled with love. He discussed it with The Giver and asked his parents if they love him and get an unexpected answer. He stopped eating pill the next day."Do you love me?"(p.159)
The Giver gave Jonas a happy memory of celebrating a holiday with family members. He discussed with Jonas about grandparents, love and family. "Grandparents. it meant parents-of-parents, long ago."(p.155)
Mother told Jonas that the word "Love" became obsolete and meaningless, that it is too general. She told Jonas another way that is more percise to ask the question of "Do you love me". "Your father means that you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it's become almost obsolete."(p.160)
Gabriel slept soundly in Jonas's room, and he gets memories from Jonas every night."Each night he gaves memories to Gabriel:memories of boat rides and picnics in the sum..."(p.161)
chapter 9
Mother told Jonas that Receiver of Memory is a important job and that he is greatly honored."You've been greatly honored, Jonas. Greatly honored."(p.85)
Father told Jonas about the selection of the Receiver that the elders made before. He said that they never saw her again and that her name wasn't allowed to be spoken or to be use against newchild."But we are never to speak this name, or to use it again for a newchild."(p.85)
Jonas feels apart from other people and was startled by the eight rules of a Receiver of Memory."The exemprtion from rudeness startled him."(p.87)
chapter 8
Jonas receive his future job as a Receiver of Memory."Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory."(p.76)
Chief Elder gave Jonas the assignment as a Receiver of Memory and described to others about the reasons for selecting Jonas."He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have."(p.78)
