The Supremacy of God in Missions - Through Prayer
Life is War
God has given us prayer "as a wartime walkie-talkie so that we can call headquarters"
The enemy is Satan, who seeks to destroy our faith
Striving, seeking, fighting, struggling
We need to have a "wartime mindset" knowing that we are in a battle
Prayer is for War, it is the means by which we fight
"Until you know that life is war, you cannot know what prayer is for. Prayer is for the accomplishment of a wartime mission." (Piper 32)
"Following Jesus will lead us into direct conflict with Evil" (Piper 33)
Prayers for peace ought to be achieve peace from the attacks of the enemy, rather than earthly comfort and peace
Election makes Missions hopeful
Jesus has "sheep" among the nations so that we should engage in Missions to that His sheep can hear Him as we, His disciples, preach.
Paul understood that the mission he was engaged on was God's work in the first place. He said that "by the grace of God" and yet "not I but Him"
God promises to give people a new heart, it is His work not ours.
Prayer is for the Glory of the Father
"The Glory of God and the joy of His people is preserved in the act of prayer" (Piper 41)
God is glorified by us bearing much fruit (John 15:8) and we can only bring this fruit through His power through prayer, therefore prayer brings about His glory.
Prayer is not the work of Missions
The proclamation of the word is the work of Missions
Prayer unleashes the power of God through His word
